Dead Sea Mud
EXTRACTION: Harvested
DESCRIPTION: The mud found at the bottom of the Dead Sea, the most saline sea in the world (8.6 times saltier than ocean water), has been used for thousands of years in health and beauty treatments. It consists of a green clay (similar to French clay) suspended in sea water with ultra-fine particles that create a smooth, creamy texture. Clay has the powerful ability to draw impurities out of skin while creating a deep exfoliation of dead skin cells. Mineral oxides give it its rich green colour and help to balance skin's flora. The salt contains high levels of magnesium to nourish skin and maintain hydration. Dead Sea mud has been used for thousands of years in health and beauty treatments.
Minerals from the Dead Sea hydrate the skin through a combination of osmotic balance, barrier support, and moisture retention. Here’s how they work:
1. Magnesium – Boosts Water Retention
-
Function: Helps strengthen the skin’s barrier by binding to lipids and proteins in the stratum corneum (outer layer).
-
Result: Reduces trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), allowing skin to retain more moisture.
2. Calcium – Supports Cell Turnover
-
Function: Plays a key role in regulating cell renewal and lipid barrier function.
-
Result: Healthier, more hydrated skin due to a more efficient epidermal barrier.
3. Potassium – Balances Skin’s Water Content
-
Function: Helps regulate the flow of fluids across cell membranes.
-
Result: Keeps skin plump, preventing dehydration and flakiness.
4. Sodium – Enhances Skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs)
-
Function: Supports the transport of nutrients and hydration into skin cells.
-
Result: Attracts and holds water, working like a humectant.
5. Bromide – Soothes and Calms
-
Function: Has mild anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties.
-
Result: Helps calm irritated or dry skin, improving comfort and texture.
