It’s been 20 years since we launched Rosey Cheeks Facial Cream, and it has been our bestseller ever since. But the story of how it came to be goes back even further, to a department store in Toronto in the 1990s.
At the time, I was working for minimum wage, and I had convinced myself that a $60 face cream was going to change my life.
Sixty dollars was a lot of money to me back then. But this was a fancy department store, with beautiful counters, luxurious packaging, and all the promises that come with expensive skincare. Surely, I thought, this cream would be different.
It wasn't.
I remember applying it and feeling so disappointed. It felt like every other cream I'd ever used. Nothing about the experience justified the price, and I couldn't understand what I had actually paid for.
I had been searching for something extraordinary. Instead, I'd bought another ordinary moisturizer in an expensive jar.
Creating the Cream of My Dreams
Years later, when I began formulating my own skincare, that disappointment stayed with me.
I wanted to create the cream I'd been looking for all those years. Something that felt genuinely different on the skin, made with beautiful ingredients chosen for what they could contribute to the formula, not simply for the luxurious impression they created.
I wasn't interested in making another cream that relied on silicones to create an instant sensation of smoothness. I wanted that beautiful feeling to come from the botanical oils, emollients, and other skin-loving ingredients themselves.
That became the philosophy behind Rosey Cheeks.
When you apply it, the experience is different. It glides across the skin, then gradually settles in, leaving it feeling soft, supple, and nourished rather than coated.
To me, that feeling is everything.
Why Botanical Oils Matter
Our skin has a remarkable relationship with lipids. They're an essential part of the skin's protective barrier, helping to keep moisture in and the outside world out.
Botanical oils contain fatty acids and other naturally occurring compounds that can contribute to the skin-conditioning properties of a moisturizer.
I wanted Rosey Cheeks to celebrate these ingredients, not hide them behind a synthetic-feeling finish.
The goal was never to create the illusion of beautiful skin for a few minutes. It was to make a moisturizer that feels wonderful to use every day while supporting skin softness, comfort, and moisture retention.
That's my idea of good skincare.
And Then There's the Rose
I couldn't write a love letter to Rosey Cheeks without talking about its scent.
Fresh rose. Real rose.
Not a synthetic fragrance designed to imitate a flower, but genuine rose absolute, one of the most precious aromatic materials in the world.
Producing rose absolute requires an extraordinary amount of rose petals. It's a labour-intensive botanical ingredient, prized for its complex aroma and naturally occurring aromatic compounds.
I chose it not only for the sensory experience, but also for its botanical chemistry, including constituents studied for antioxidant activity.
There is something deeply beautiful about opening a jar of face cream and experiencing the scent of real roses. It's delicate, sophisticated, and unmistakably botanical.
It makes an ordinary moment in your day feel a little less ordinary.
And I think that matters.
What Luxury Means to Me Now
Looking back, I realize that what disappointed me most about that $60 cream wasn't that it failed to transform my skin overnight.
It was that there was nothing remarkable about it.
I had paid for luxury, but I hadn't experienced it.
Twenty years of making skincare have only strengthened my belief that true luxury isn't about expensive packaging, prestigious names, or extravagant promises.
It's about the quality of the materials. The thought that goes into a formula. The pleasure of using something beautifully made.
It's about opening a jar and knowing that what's inside is the reason it's special.
That's what I wanted Rosey Cheeks to be.
And twenty years later, it's still the cream I reach for every day.
Knowing that so many of you have made it part of your own daily rituals is one of the most rewarding things about building Cocoon Apothecary.
Rosey Cheeks is the cream I always wanted. And I'm so happy I get to share it with you.
