What Is Hiding Behind “Fragrance”?

Fragrance is often treated as a finishing touch—the part of a product that makes it feel luxurious, clean or memorable. But in conventional personal care, “fragrance” is not necessarily one ingredient. It can be a formulated mixture of numerous aromatic materials, solvents, stabilizers and fixatives, represented on the label by a single word: parfum or fragrance.

That creates an unusual situation. You may be able to read the name of every emulsifier, plant oil and preservative in a cream, yet the ingredients responsible for its scent can remain largely concealed inside one umbrella term.

At Cocoon Apothecary, we have never believed that scent should require that compromise. We use essential oils and clearly identified botanical aromatic ingredients, at carefully controlled concentrations, because we want to know what creates a product’s aroma—and we believe our customers deserve to know too.

Our position is not that every synthetic molecule is automatically dangerous or that everything natural is automatically harmless. Chemistry is more complicated than that. Our concern is the combination of limited transparency, intensive industrial feedstocks, avoidable sensitization, scent-triggered symptoms for some people and the persistence of certain fragrance chemicals in bodies and ecosystems.

1. “Fragrance” can conceal the real formula

Fragrance formulas are generally treated as proprietary compositions. In Canada, manufacturers may list a fragrance mixture under the single INCI term parfum instead of naming every component individually.

Canadian rules are improving. As of April 2026, 24 recognized fragrance allergens must be individually disclosed when they exceed specified thresholds. For new cosmetics, the list expanded to 81 fragrance allergens in August 2026; existing products have until August 2028 to comply with the expanded requirements.

This is meaningful progress, but it is not complete fragrance disclosure. The label may identify regulated allergens above their reporting thresholds while the balance of the fragrance formula remains grouped under “parfum.” A customer can therefore see that a fragrance mixture is present without knowing its complete composition, how many aromatic materials it contains or the origin of those materials.

That matters for people trying to identify a sensitivity. It also matters to anyone who simply wants to understand what they apply to their skin every day.

At Cocoon, we take a different approach. If lavender essential oil creates the aroma, we list lavender. If ylang-ylang, rosemary or lemongrass is present, it appears by name. Naturally occurring fragrance allergens such as limonene, linalool or citral are also disclosed where required. Botanical does not mean exempt from chemistry—and transparency should apply equally to natural ingredients.

2. Where synthetic fragrance materials come from

The word “synthetic” describes how a molecule is manufactured, not one single source. Synthetic aroma chemicals may be produced from several industrial feedstocks.

Many begin with petrochemicals: compounds separated and transformed from petroleum or natural-gas supply chains. Through chemical reactions, manufacturers can create aromatic molecules with very specific scent profiles—perhaps a clean musk, a persistent floral note or a fruit aroma that remains stable for months.

Other aroma chemicals begin with crude sulfate turpentine, a co-product of kraft wood pulping. During pulp production, volatile compounds from pine wood are captured and refined. Molecules such as alpha-pinene and beta-pinene can then be separated and chemically converted into other fragrance materials.

Calling these substances “byproducts” does not, by itself, prove that they are unsafe. Recovering a useful material from another industrial process can reduce waste, and pine-derived feedstocks may be renewable. Nor does petroleum origin alone determine the toxicology of the finished molecule. The safety of a substance depends on its molecular structure, purity, dose, route of exposure and actual use.

But origin still matters to us.

We built Cocoon around identifiable plant ingredients, responsible sourcing and a direct relationship between the material on the label and the plant from which it came. A highly processed aroma molecule derived from petrochemical feedstocks—or transformed through the pulp-chemical industry—does not provide that same relationship. It may imitate a flower, fruit or wood without containing anything recognizable from that botanical source.

Synthetic fragrance also makes it difficult for the customer to determine which feedstock was used. Two products can both say “parfum” while containing completely different mixtures from different supply chains.

Our choice is philosophical as well as practical: if a product smells of lavender, we want that aroma to come from lavender—not from an undisclosed reconstruction of lavender.

3. Fragrance and irritated skin

Fragrance ingredients are among the recognized causes of allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetics. This is not the same as an immediate irritation.

Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when a substance directly disrupts or inflames the skin. It may cause burning, stinging, dryness or redness.

Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune response. A person first becomes sensitized to a particular chemical. Once that sensitization develops, later exposure may produce an itchy, red, swollen or blistered rash—even at a relatively low concentration. The face, neck, hands and underarms are common sites because they are frequently exposed to fragranced personal-care products.

Oxidation can change the allergenic potential of an aromatic ingredient. For example, limonene and linalool—compounds that occur naturally in many essential oils and may also be manufactured—can react with oxygen over time. Some of their oxidation products are more sensitizing than the fresh compounds. This is why ingredient quality, storage, packaging, freshness and antioxidant protection matter.

It is important to be precise: natural essential oils can also cause irritation or allergy. “Natural” does not mean universally non-allergenic. Cocoon’s answer is not to pretend otherwise. We formulate essential oils sparingly, comply with relevant safety limits, disclose required allergens and avoid using aroma merely to overwhelm the senses.

The difference is that the aromatic source is identified. A customer and their healthcare provider can see what is present, rather than trying to investigate a proprietary fragrance accord hidden behind one word.

4. Why fragrance can trigger headaches

For some people—particularly those who experience migraine—perfume and other strong odours can trigger or intensify an attack. Researchers have documented perfume as a commonly reported odour trigger among people with migraine, sometimes within minutes of exposure.

That does not mean fragrance causes migraine in everyone, nor does it prove that synthetic fragrance is the only type of scent capable of triggering a headache. Natural aromas can be triggers too. The response depends on the individual, the intensity and duration of exposure, ventilation, the particular volatile compounds and the person’s neurological sensitivity.

Still, the experience is real. Scent is not confined to the skin. Volatile molecules travel through the air and interact with the olfactory and trigeminal sensory systems. For a sensitive person, an intensely fragranced cream, detergent, candle or room spray can become more than an aesthetic preference.

This is one reason Cocoon products smell botanical rather than perfumed. We want the aroma to be part of the plant experience, not an artificial cloud engineered to remain on the body or in the room for as long as possible. Our products are not all fragrance-free, so anyone with a known sensitivity should still read the ingredient list and choose accordingly. But we do not use proprietary synthetic perfume mixtures to amplify or prolong scent.

5. The bioaccumulation question: what the evidence actually says

It would be inaccurate to say that every synthetic fragrance ingredient accumulates in the human body. Many aromatic molecules are metabolized and eliminated. The concern applies to particular chemical families—most notably some older nitro musks and widely used polycyclic musks.

Musks are fragrance materials used to create a warm base note and help scent last longer. Certain synthetic musks are lipophilic, meaning they are attracted to fats rather than water. That property can make them persistent and allow them to accumulate in fatty tissues or aquatic organisms.

Researchers have detected specific synthetic musk compounds in human blood, adipose tissue and breast milk, as well as wastewater, sediment, fish and other wildlife. Detection proves exposure and persistence; it does not, by itself, prove that the measured level causes disease. Human risk depends on the identity of the chemical, its concentration, frequency of exposure and biological activity.

Nevertheless, persistence changes the nature of the question. A fragrance ingredient may be applied briefly, washed down a drain and forgotten by the user, yet remain in wastewater or sediment and continue moving through the environment. Some compounds have been restricted or abandoned, while newer musk materials have different environmental profiles. Because a label saying “parfum” does not normally reveal whether a musk is present—or which one—it is difficult for a customer to make that distinction.

For Cocoon, uncertainty is not a reason for alarmist claims. It is a reason to choose a simpler and more transparent path.

6. Skin exposure becomes environmental exposure

Most personal-care fragrance does not remain on the person forever. It evaporates into indoor air, transfers to clothing and bedding, or enters wastewater when products and bodies are washed.

Wastewater treatment does not remove every fragrance chemical equally. Volatile compounds may enter the air; fat-loving compounds can bind to sludge or persist in water and sediment. Synthetic musk fragrances have been measured in multiple environmental compartments, with wastewater identified as an important route.

Again, synthetic fragrance is not one chemical and cannot be assigned one environmental fate. Some molecules biodegrade readily; others are more persistent. But the absence of complete disclosure makes it hard for customers to tell which kind they are buying.

Our preference is to formulate with a restrained number of identifiable aromatic botanicals rather than an undisclosed mixture designed primarily for power, consistency and longevity.

7. Natural aroma is not the same as synthetic perfume

A naturally aromatic formula behaves differently from a conventional perfume accord.

Essential oils contain complex combinations of volatile plant compounds. They can smell slightly different from harvest to harvest because climate, soil, plant variety and distillation all influence their composition. To us, this is not a defect. It is evidence that the aroma came from a living agricultural material.

Synthetic perfumery can recreate a scent with remarkable precision and consistency. It can also produce aromas that are less expensive, more forceful or more persistent than the original botanical. Those characteristics may be useful to other brands. They are simply not what Cocoon is trying to make.

We want aroma to complement skincare—not disguise raw materials, dominate the wearer or imitate nature while concealing its own composition.

How to tell what kind of fragrance is in a product

The front of a package is advertising. The ingredient list is where the useful information lives.

Start by looking for parfum, fragrance or aroma. In a cosmetic, one of these umbrella terms generally means that a composed fragrance mixture has been added. It does not tell you whether every material in that mixture is synthetic, natural or a combination of both. Claims such as “naturally inspired,” “botanical scent,” “clean fragrance” and “made with essential oils” do not resolve that question. A perfume can contain a small quantity of essential oil alongside a much larger proprietary fragrance mixture.

Next, look for botanicals written by their INCI names. Essential oils and plant extracts are usually identified specifically, for example:

  • Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil

  • Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Peel Oil

  • Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil

  • Cananga Odorata Flower Oil

  • Boswellia Carterii Oil or a named frankincense extract

If these named botanicals create the scent and no parfum/fragrance appears elsewhere, the aroma is likely coming from the disclosed plant materials. For full certainty, ask the company directly whether the product contains synthetic aroma chemicals or a proprietary fragrance blend.

You may also see names such as limonene, linalool, citral, geraniol, eugenol or coumarin. Their presence does not automatically mean synthetic fragrance has been added. These molecules occur naturally within many essential oils and must be separately disclosed above regulatory thresholds because they are recognized fragrance allergens. On Cocoon labels, they may appear as naturally occurring constituents of the essential oils already named.

The most revealing questions are:

  1. Does the ingredient list contain parfum or fragrance?

  2. Are the actual aromatic plants identified by name?

  3. Does the company say “made with essential oils,” or does it say scented only with essential oils?

  4. Will the company provide the complete fragrance composition or clearly explain its source?

What common label wording actually tells you

Which scents can be created naturally—and which cannot?

Natural perfumery has an extraordinary palette, but it has limits. Some plants readily produce an essential oil, absolute, CO₂ extract or resin. Others produce too little aromatic material, are too delicate to survive extraction or do not yield an extract that smells like the living flower.

There is also a difference between extracting a scent from its named source and reconstructing the impression of that scent. A natural perfumer may create a convincing lilac accord from several unrelated botanical extracts, but there is generally no commercially useful lilac essential oil. The resulting blend is natural, yet it was not extracted from lilac.

This does not mean that every scent without a direct extract is impossible for a natural perfumer. Botanical materials can be blended to suggest fruit, flowers, rain or warm fabric. The honest description, however, is a natural botanical accord—not an essential oil from a plant that does not produce one.

For shoppers, an unusually strong, sweet, diffusive or exceptionally long-lasting fruit, laundry, ocean or candy scent is a useful clue that a composed fragrance is present. It is not proof. The ingredient list and a transparent answer from the manufacturer remain the best evidence.

Our standard at Cocoon

We do not use synthetic fragrance because:

  • We believe in complete, useful ingredient information. “Parfum” can still conceal much of a proprietary fragrance mixture, even as allergen-labelling rules improve.

  • We prefer recognizable botanical sources. Many synthetic aroma chemicals originate in petrochemical supply chains or are chemically transformed from pulp-industry co-products. We choose direct plant aromatics instead.

  • Fragrance can be a skin sensitizer. Both synthetic and natural aromatic compounds require responsible formulation, but identified ingredients make informed avoidance possible.

  • Strong odours can trigger headaches or migraine in susceptible people. We do not engineer perfume clouds for maximum diffusion and persistence.

  • Certain synthetic musks are persistent and bioaccumulative. Some have been detected in human tissue and throughout aquatic environments, although detection is not the same as proof of harm.

  • Scent should never be more important than skin. We use essential oils sparingly and purposefully, within applicable safety standards.

A more honest kind of aroma

There is a meaningful difference between saying that a product is scented and showing exactly what scents it.

At Cocoon, lavender smells like lavender because lavender is present. Citrus comes from citrus peel. Frankincense comes from aromatic resin. These materials still require knowledge, restraint and respect; plants contain potent chemistry too. But their identities are not hidden behind an imagined flower, a proprietary accord or a single catch-all word.

We believe skincare should help you understand what you are putting on your body—not ask you to accept a mystery for the sake of a more persistent scent.

That is why we choose botanical aroma over synthetic fragrance: not because “natural” is a magic word, but because transparency, traceability and thoughtful formulation are part of what makes skincare trustworthy.
