Winter Product Recommendations + Skin Care Tips

Winter is hard on our delicate skin barrier. As the temperature dips, so does humidity, and the air becomes dry. If you ignore your skin, it can become irritated, rough, and dehydrated or dry in no time. Skin in winter requires a little extra love and care.
Here are some tips and recommendations that will keep your skin healthy, happy, and radiant throughout the colder months.

1.Protect Your Barrier

If you want supple and soft skin during winter, you need to build a strong bond with your facial cream. Facial creams are an emulsion of water with wax and oil that will retain water as well as create a barrier to prevent a decrease in moisture from evaporation.
Go for moisturizers that contain hydrating and protective ingredients. Rosehip oil, shea butter and avocado oil work together in our Rosey Cheeks Facial Cream to quench thirsty skin and protect against moisture loss.

When the temperature dips, you need to take extra care. If you plan to spend time outdoors, apply a facial oil or balm as a mask. This will provide an extra barrier to protect your skin.

2. Exfoliate Sparingly

It is important to slow down on sloughing off flaky skin. When the temperature freezes, your skin barrier gets weaker. Getting rid of dead skin at this time may cause further damage.
If you have flaky skin, it means it is dehydrated and the skin's natural barrier is not maintaining healthy levels. Many people combat this with exfoliating which further scrubs off the barrier exasperating the problem. Instead of exfoliating, try rebuilding your barrier with oils high in linoleic acid and antioxidants. Rosehip Oil Facial Oil Serum or Carotene Glow Antioxidant Booster with sea buckthorn both work to rebuild the barrier.
Dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water and hyaluronic acid, which also decreases as we age. To add to that, arid climates and indoor heating with humidity levels well below a healthy 60% can suck the moisture out of your skin.  Use polysaccharides such as aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, rose water, and our special moss, fern, and lichen blend in Nordic Boost Hydrating Serum because they are water-binding agents that maintain water levels in the skin.
If you are looking to clear pores and promote skin renewal be sure to use a gentle exfoliator such as jojoba beads found in our Petal Purity Exfoliating Cleanser

3. Don't Ditch Your Sunscreen

A cold climate still requires sun protection. While UV rays are less direct during winter, they reflect off of snow causing sun damage to exposed skin. If you plan on spending time outdoors it is important to use an SPF such as our Reflector SPF 30 Facial Sun Protection

4.Use Gentle + Hydrating Ingredients on Your Body

While paying special attention to facial skin care is key in winter - hands, feet and elbows can become especially dry. Cleansing with gentle and non-stripping products is a huge factor in preventing dry and irritated skin. Our Touchy Feely Hand Soap and Kahuna Hand Soap cleanse hands gently without drying out skin. Our bar soaps such as Patchouli Bar Soap create a gentle lather that is ideal for dry and sensitive skin.
Is your hand sanitizer contributing to your dry, cracking hands? Our Hand Sanitizer Gel has moisturizing ingredients including aloe vera juice and glycerin to prevent dryness.
Body lotions are important for soothing and protecting skin. Our Magic Bean Body Lotion is a super rich formula that hydrates and protects for the whole day. The best time to apply body lotion is directly after the shower - it absorbs best when the skin is slightly damp.
