Dead Sea Mud

Description: The black mud found at the bottom of the Dead Sea, the deepest and most saline sea in the world (8.6 times saltier than the ocean). The mud and water have been used for thousands of years in health and beauty treatments. The salt contains an extraordinary mineral content of calcium (14.4%), potassium (4.4%), magnesium (50.8%), sodium (30.4%), and trace levels of zinc. In comparison, the salt in the water of most oceans and seas is approximately 97% sodium. The mud’s dark green colour can be attributed to a micro-algae known as Dunaliella salina, which produces carotenoid antioxidants and contains high levels of glycerol to help hydrate the skin and support its elasticity.
